Artwork Explained: Nidhogg

Artwork Explained: Nidhogg

Introducing this week's design, drop the insane Nidhogg apparel range inspired by the serpent who gnaws at the roots of the Yggdrasil (Norse Tree of Life). This extraordinary range features the most intricate and hypnotic artwork. Let's now explore the meaning and the artwork behind this incredible work of wearable art.

Nidhogg, or Níðhöggr in Old Norse is a terrifying Dragon/Serpent who gnaws at the roots of the Norse Tree of Life, Yggdrasil. This tree supports the nine realms in Norse mythology. Nidhogg was a power-ravenous monster and was and is still sometimes referred to as the Malice Striker. This is a fitting name for Nidhogg considering he rules over certain dark criminals and is dedicated to destroying peace and virtue. However...

Balance is also extremely important in Norse Mythology and although Nidhogg is terrifying he does play a vital role in maintaining the balance of Yggdrasil. A great eagle resides in the upper branches of Yggdrasil and he represents wisdom and virtue and Nidhogg who represents chaos and evil lurks in its roots. There is a constant tension between them which is fuelled by Ratatoskr, a squirrel who runs up and down carrying insults between the enemies. This promotes a cycle of growth in the tree because after the Eagle and Nidhogg spend the day destroying the tree in their frenzy to attack one another, the tree is washed in water from the wells of Urd and this promotes healing and new growth.

Nidhogg also plays a role in the punishment of criminals. He rules over the dark shores of Nadastrond, to which the corpses of murderers, adulterers, and oath-breakers are banished. A terrifying hall, with walls woven from serpents and a ceiling that drips venom, waits for these criminals. Nidhogg also plays a role in the Ragnarok and features prominently in the prophecy.

Explore the artwork to see the tale come to life of the terrifying but important Norse Serpent! We hope you love this wearable work of art just as much as we do!
